Baan Ko Raet Community is a small island community located in Ban Don Bay, Moo 3, Don Sak sub-district, Don Sak district, Surat Thani Province. The name of the island is derived from the word “Raed”(the Thai word for Rhino), spelled with the name of the animal. The Chinese have dubbed this island as “Hee-Deng”, which means “Heaven Lamps”, and later on, the Chinese wrote “t” spelled instead of “d”. It is also assumed that the island has a lot of Pear trees (which are called “Ton Kee Raed” in Thai), so the island is called as such.
From the old Chinese accounts, it is said that before the present island community of Koh Raet, originally the island had Muslims who migrated from Narathiwat and Pattani provinces, to become the first inhabitants.
Around 1860, the they took a career in coastal fishing. Upon arriving at the island of Raet, they saw that this area had plenty of water animals, suitable for the occupation, so they settled down here.
